Diabetes is associated with several long term complications of various organs. Hence it is vital that diabetes is managed well and blood sugar levels are kept under control. In this article we will look at some long term complications commonly seen in people suffering from diabetes in our latest diabetes news.

Diabetic retinopathy: Eyes can get significantly affected due to diabetes. The symptoms may not be visible till it is very late. Diabetic retinopathy is caused when the blood flow to the retina is affected due to diabetes. Sometimes additional blood vessels would develop in the retina. This can affect the vision and lead to blindness due to retinal detachment. Diabetic patients may also suffer from other eye diseases such as cataract and glaucoma. Diabetic patients must undergo regular checkup to identify these complications as early as possible and undergo necessary treatments.

Diabetic nephropathy: Diabetic nephropathy is caused when continuous elevated blood sugar levels lead to kidney failure.  In the initial stages there are no symptoms due to diabetic nephropathy. Diabetic nephropathy can be diagnosed with the help of a urine test which measures microalbumin levels. Infections such as urinary tract infections should be treated as soon as they occur in diabetic patients. In the later stages of the diabetic nephropathy, symptoms like urine discoloration, presence of blood in urine and frequent urination may be present. It can also be manifested as nausea, headache and vomiting. If diabetic nephropathy is present then the patient may need medication for lowering of blood pressure as well as a modification of the diet to reduce protein consumption.

Diabetic neuropathy: Diabetes can lead to lowered blood flow to the extremities and can cause nerve hurt which leads to loss of sensation in the feet and hands. Due to high blood glucose levels, chemical changes can affect the nerves. Neuropathy affects more than half the diabetic population world over. The symptoms are a loss of sensation in the hands and feet as well as less amount of sweat and loss of sensation. If blood sugar levels are maintained carefully, then diabetic neuropathy can be reversed to a certain extent. If simple steps are taken to protect the feet, then amputations can be prevented. Even small sores or blisters in the feet should be promptly treated and Vitamin E is found to help improve blood circulation to the limbs.

    A1C Home Kit

thisiscaleb.wordpress.com Caleb has Type 1 diabetes. He uses the omnipod insulin management system. Many people with Type 1 visit their endo every three months. Because we are able to keep excellent control over Caleb’s bgs and quarterly endo visits yield small other than an A1C check, Caleb goes semi-annually, with A1C checks done locally in between. The day we were plotting to visit the lab for a blood draw, I happened across a home A1C kit. It seemed like fate. So later, Caleb and I were home, performing the test, rather than in the lab. With a1cs performed twice a year in the endo office and once a year in conjunction with his annual blood work, this seems like a reasonable option for a once a year check to help minimize a small of the discomfort and burden that managing type 1 diabetes requires.
